Appian is our best source in order to record the Roman wars in Hispania during the second half of the second century B.C. When considering the agreements signed by the Roman magistrates involved in such wars, two different perspectives arise. According to the traditional view of the Senate, signed agreements with the enemy were hardly permitted. However, such agreements were seen differently by the magistrates in charge of the regular military campaigns, usually under pressure not only by daily affairs but also but the outcome of their own provincial commands. At Iberica, Appian attempts to reconcile both realities using data formerly collected by the Annalists and some rhetorical resources of his own.
