This paper advocates printing the fragment currently known as Eubulides fr. 1 K.-A. as Com. adesp. fr. novum. The fragment is quoted in a probably corrupted section of Athenaeus’ Deipnosophistae, where we find information about the sophists which is not otherwise confirmed. The fragment is attributed by Athenaeus to ‘Eubulides the dialectical philosopher’, which invites the question whether he is referring to an otherwise unknown comic poet from the 4th century (as all previous editors thought), to a later comic poet from the 3rd-2nd century known only epigraphically, or – given the epithet – to the Megarian philosopher. The article considers all possibilities and, through comparison with similar cases, identifies the reasons for the corruption in Athenaeus.
