Giovanni Pascoli arrived in Massa on 5th October 1884 from Matera, where he had spent two years as Greek and Latin teacher at the High School Duni. In Massa the young professor, – former student of Giosué Carducci at Bologna University – got a Chair of Human Letters at the Gymnasium «P. Rossi» for three years and the role as History and Geography teacher at the City Technical Secondary School as well. He was received with fraternal friendship by his school colleagues (mainly by the professors Agnoloni and Bonuccelli) and stayed at the Hotel Il Giappone in Aranci Square for some months. Later he rented a beautiful house with garden in the «Zecca» area, nowadays Giovanni Pascoli Street, housed his sisters Ida and Maria and, therefore, established again his family nest. The poet was enchanted by the beauty of the landscape «… between the mountains and the seaside, between the beech and orange trees, in the little painted Massa», as he will write in the Messa d’oro some years later. The view of the rugged and light blue Apuan Alps, the colors, the shapes and all endless whispers of a rural and restful landscape offered him special emotions and inspirations; so he described with lucid and 42 high-sounding words the atmospheres, the profiles, the most secret and ineffable characteristics of a landscape which, furthermore, stands for the places and landscapes of soul.
