The early medieval Church is usually considered in terms of its pastoral and theological importance, rather than for its economic significance. But it can usefully be studied in the light of criteria set out in scholarship dealing with the Temple Societies of South-East Asia. From this point of view, by the seventh century it was at the heart of a network of economic redistribution that was central to the early medieval economy.
