This article presents a letter dated 3.8.1922 from E. Lobel to H.I. Bell, in which Lobel ridicules Wilamowitz for inventing the word οῦον, ‘rope’. The correspondence illuminates Lobel’s famous antipathy toward Wilamowitz and the ongoing debate over the foremost Hellenist of the early twentieth century.
